At Takeda, AI Propels Long-Term Value

Caroline Schmitt, the biopharmaceutical leader’s head of enterprise digital, discusses its efforts to use AI to enable its workforce and transform the entire value chain. As one of the world’s leading biopharmaceutical companies, Takeda Pharmaceutical Company Limited, headquartered in Japan, has made bold moves to accelerate its data and digital transformation.

According to Caroline Schmitt, Takeda’s head of enterprise digital in Global IT, the company will continually adapt to unlock the value of AI and remain grounded in a strong vision for its people-led, technology-supported change.

“We’re not looking for AI to deliver a quick win or short-term impact,” Schmitt says. “We recognize it requires a systematic, well-resourced approach mobilized by the entire organization, a strong data strategy, and an intense focus on talent.”

Schmitt, based in Zurich, Switzerland, says her professional background, including positions at tech startups related to manufacturing and agriculture, provides her with broad experience when considering how technology can shift ways of working and evolve entire industries. “I’m bringing my passion for AI to bear to understand better what it takes for an organization to embrace change at this speed,” she says.

In this AI From the Front Lines interview, Schmitt spoke with Beena Ammanath, executive director of the Original Postages/deloitte-analytics/articles/advancing-human-ai-collaboration.html?id=us:2el:3dp:wsjspon:awa:WSJCIO:2022:WSJFY22" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Deloitte AI Institute, about topics ranging from Takeda’s goal of developing an AI assistant for every employee to the importance of stakeholder collaboration in supporting an AI agenda.

Ammanath: Like you, I’ve worked across a variety of industries, and I believe breadth of background can help leaders develop very unique perspectives. What are some of the biggest opportunities you see in your work at Takeda for AI to affect your business in the long term?

Schmitt: The opportunities are huge and can influence the entire value chain, from company operations to drug discovery, manufacturing, and supply chain. We are also exploring use cases related to how patients may interact with health care professionals in the future and how AI could help shape the future of work. For example, we are looking at developing an AI “companion” that helps employees with their daily tasks and reduces the burden of repetitive or cumbersome processes while also bringing more accuracy and precision to historically manual work.

I love the idea of an AI companion. You describe it as a personal AI employee assistant available throughout the organization. Where does your organization stand in the journey of creating it?

It truly is a journey that will take us some time. To your point, the initiative can’t reflect a siloed approach, so we’re very lucky that our CEO, Christophe Weber, has supported and articulated the vision. But what does it take to achieve that vision? We have all the technology components in place; moving forward, we know it will hinge on a coordinated approach, a lot of data, intelligent automation, and integrated machine learning and natural language processing capabilities. With those elements, we are now ready to engage as many parts of the organization as possible, bringing our village together to achieve this common goal of creating a companion that is responsive to and can evolve alongside employee and business needs.

That is an exciting prospect! And also, I imagine, a challenging one. According to Deloitte’s 2021 Tech Trends report, new technologies and approaches are necessary to eliminate machine learning roadblocks, while engineering and operational discipline are key to overcoming AI obstacles. In your organization, how do you enable AI success?

Leaders need to focus not just on shorter-term earning cycles but also on adding value longer term by committing to data and digital investments and innovation like AI. Being AI-enabled does not necessarily translate into AI success; rather, success rests on continually adapting at the speed of technology and data, and ensuring there is a vision, enterprisewide collaboration, and strong data strategy and governance. Without these elements, it can be difficult to know where the data sits or how it can guide strategic decision-making.

Can you discuss the complex ecosystem of AI in terms of regulation? In life sciences and health care alone, there are many different views into the same problems, so regulation will likely require nuanced, not blanket, policies.

Effective regulation will take a large collaborative effort among many different players in health care and life sciences, including biopharmaceutical, technology, and data companies; payers; and providers, among others. At stake is a common goal for us all: a better future for patients. All stakeholders need to work together to evolve regulations and policies to ensure we do the right thing from an ethical perspective while also concurrently innovating.

According to Deloitte’s third annual State of AI in the Enterprise report, 73% of survey respondents say AI is very or critically important to their business today—and AI success largely depends on the people practicing it. AI talent models can vary significantly from organization to organization. Sometimes, these individuals sit in a center of excellence; other times, they are distributed throughout engineering teams or other functions. How are AI and data teams organized in your business?

We position them on many different fronts. My team works on everything digital, AI, culture, and talent from a central point of view. Then, business functions own and drive individual agendas on what AI means for them. Our manufacturing and supply organization, for example, has data scientists working closely with the IT organization. Together, they’re unlocking some of the automation promise of data and AI. Likewise, in our R&D organization, we have what we call the Data Sciences Institute. Its focus is on getting medicines to patients faster, using data in regulatory submissions, and accelerating drug discovery. All of these aspects are critical components in advancing Takeda’s commitment to bringing better health for people and a brighter future for the world.

Editor’s note: This is the fifth article in the series AI From the Front Lines, which goes beyond the hype to reveal the opportunities and challenges enterprises can realize through AI and data analytics and features the real-world experiences of enterprise executives in conversation with Beena Ammanath, executive director of Deloitte’s AI Institute.
