BondBloxx Adds 3 BBB-Rated Corporate Bond ETFs

These ETFs matter because they turn a broad corporate-bond allocation into three distinct building blocks. For investors already using investment-grade bond exposure, the real question is not just credit quality, but where along the maturity curve that credit exposure sits. Splitting BBB corporates into 1โ€“5 year, 5โ€“10 year, and 10+ year sleeves can make duration management more deliberate rather than incidental.

That structure also changes how the funds may behave inside a portfolio. Shorter-maturity BBB bonds should generally be less sensitive to rate moves than longer-dated holdings, while the long-bond sleeve carries more price volatility from changes in yields. For investors pairing bond funds with other fixed-income or equity exposures, this kind of segmentation can help separate credit exposure from interest-rate exposure more cleanly.

The methodology matters too. Market-value weighting means the funds reflect the size of issuers and outstanding debt within the index, rather than trying to isolate the highest-yielding bonds or avoid larger borrowers entirely. That can improve transparency, but it also means concentration and issuer composition still deserve attention, especially when the universe is limited to a single credit tier.

At 0.19%, the expense ratio is part of the decision, but fixed-income investors should also watch the implementation details: liquidity of the underlying bonds, how tightly the ETF tracks its index, and whether the chosen maturity bucket fits the rest of the portfolio. In practice, the value of these products is less about a headline label and more about whether they help investors fine-tune bond risk with more precision.

BondBloxx added a trio of ETFs covering the bottom credit tier of the investment-grade corporate bond market. Each fund targets a different maturity range. They and their tickers are as follows: The three funds track market-value-weighted indexes from Bloomberg and have expense ratios of 0.19%. โ€œInvestors who own broad investment grade ETFs in different maturity categories can now use these new BondBloxx ETFs to target BBB-rated bonds and benefit from the higher coupon of this compelling segment within the investment grade corporate bond market,โ€ BondBloxxโ€™s Co-Founder Tony Kelly said. The press release cites data from Bloomberg indicating, for 20 years, BBB-rated corporate bonds have performed better than the broader investment-grade corporate bond space. They have approximately the same level of default risk to the tune of 50 basis points annually. The BondBloxx team says the fundamentals for the space remain strong. โ€œInvestment grade corporates continue to be an area of focus for investors, and within that universe, BBBs offer a unique opportunity for potential outperformance,โ€ BondBloxx Investment Strategist JoAnne Bianco said. She added that prior to todayโ€™s launch, investors had few choices in terms of accessing specific exposures within the BBB tier for corporate debt.

A Focus on Fixed Income

BondBloxx was founded by ETF industry veterans who saw a need for products offering more precise exposures to fixed income securities. The firm entered the market in early 2022. It now offers 23 ETFs that drill down to cover specific slices of the bond market based. They are based on bond type, equity sector and credit rating. BondBloxx currently has roughly $2.7 billion in assets under management. Its largest fund is theย BondBloxx Bloomberg Six Month Target Duration US Treasury ETF (XHLF). It has $1.2 billion in assets under management. โ€œThereโ€™s growing demand for fixed income ETFs from advisors in the past year. Itโ€™s great to see the BondBloxx team continue to expand its lineup with innovative products,โ€ said Todd Rosenbluth, VettaFiโ€™s head of research. https://www.etftrends.com/institutional-income-strategies-channel/bondbloxx-adds-bbb-rated-corporate-bond-etfs/
