Diversify Your Income Portfolio Without Sacrificing Yields
For income investors, the key question is not just yield, but where that yield is coming from. An ultra-short corporate bond ETF can look similar to a cash alternative on the surface, yet its portfolio is built from a distinct set of issuers, maturities and screening rules. That means two funds with comparable duration can still behave differently when spreads move, sectors rotate or the market re-prices credit quality.
The index design matters here. A 0-1 year corporate bond benchmark naturally concentrates the portfolio in the shortest end of the credit curve, where reinvestment happens quickly and the fundโs holdings change more often than a longer-duration strategy. For ETF investors, that creates a practical trade-off: limited interest-rate sensitivity, but a stronger dependence on ongoing access to short-dated investment-grade paper and the stability of credit spreads.
Sustainability screening can also change the fundโs role in a portfolio. ESG or climate rules do not simply remove a few names; they can reshape sector exposure, issuer weights and the balance between financials, industrials and other corporate segments. In fixed income, that may be less dramatic than in equities, but it still affects diversification and how the fund complements other short-duration holdings.
Finally, the expense ratio deserves attention once the fee waiver ends. In short-duration bond ETFs, small differences in cost can matter because the underlying yield cushion is narrower than in higher-yield credit funds. Investors should watch the full implementation picture โ index rules, turnover, costs and liquidity โ rather than focusing on headline yield alone.
Seek Outperforming Yields Within Short Duration With KSCH
Notably, the strategy aims to generate a yield that outperforms Treasuries as well as money markets. As of the end of June, the Solactive ISS Sustainable Select 0-1 Year USD Corporate IG Index generated an average yield of 5.6%. In comparison, the State Street US Government Money Market generated average yields of 5.24% while the Bloomberg US Corporate 1-3 Years Index averaged yields of 5.12%, according to theย issuerโs website. KCSHโs strategy goes one step further in screening for those issuers that align with the Paris Agreement. It also includes climate analysis by Institutional Shareholder Services. This entails curtailing global emissions to 1.5 ยฐ Celsius by 2050. Issuers must demonstrate self-decarbonization of 7% or greater each year before their inclusion in the portfolio. The strategy also excludes issuers whose revenues are derived from fossil fuels, as well as other screens. โWhen you ex fossil fuels out of the S&P 500, you get something totally different. In bonds, thereโs obviously sector factors, but theyโre much more muted,โ explained Oliver. The fundโs focus on sustainability creates a diversified portfolio of issuer sector weights compared to peers within the space. This makes it a complement to other short duration funds within a portfolio, and a strong addition to an income sleeve.

โYou donโt increase your risk, you donโt increase your volatility, and you donโt reduce your yield to remove fossil fuel exposure in fixed income,โ Oliver added.
KCSH has an operating expense of 0.20% with fee waivers that end August 1, 2025.
